Meet the Slate

Tim Sylvester
Candidate for Local 804 President

tim-bio“Local 804 used to stand up to management, bargain strong contracts and protect our benefits. We can be that kind of union again.  That’s why I’m running for Local 804 President.”

A thirty-year Teamster, Tim Sylvester believes in the brand of Teamster Power brought to Local 804 by Ron Carey—that a strong union comes from an informed and mobilized membership.  In the 1990s, Tim served as a Package Steward and volunteer organizer and was hired by Local 804 to help set up the union’s safety program.  In 1996, Ron Carey hired Tim to work as an International Organizer on the campaign to organize Overnite Transportation (now UPS Freight).   Read more.

Jim Reynolds
Candidate for Local 804 Secretary-Treasurer

jim reynolds-bio“When we demand respect, we can command respect. Local 804 members have proven that time and again.  This pride and power is the heritage of every Local 804 Teamster. Our obligation is not to torch the past—but to pass the torch.”

A 29-year Teamster, Jim Reynolds has more than twenty years experience as a Steward and Alternate Steward.  Jim has decades of experience of standing up to UPS and putting Teamster members first—from the shop floor, to the floor of the Teamster Convention, to the bargaining table and the picket line.  Jim was appointed by Ron Carey to serve as a rank-and-file representative during the 1994 negotiations of the Local 804 supplement—and as a Sergeant of Arms at the 1996 International Union Convention.  In 1997, Jim served as a Strike Captain during the historic UPS strike.  Read more.

Pete Mastrandrea
Candidate for Local 804 Vice President

pete_mastrandrea-bio“Local 804 needs to get back to the basics that made us the most powerful Teamster local in the country —stand-up representation, aggressive contract enforcement, and mobilizing members to win strong contracts and protect our benefits.”

A driver in the Long Island feeder department, Pete Mastrandrea is a 34-year Teamster and a 30-year member of Local 804.  Pete served as a shop steward from 1981 until 1993 when General President Ron Carey took Pete off the truck at UPS and assigned him to work as an International Trustee as part of an effort to clean up corruption and return Teamster locals to their members.  Read more.

David Fennell
Candidate for
Local 804 Recording Secretary

Dave Fennel-bio“I’m tired of hearing our Business Agents say that management can do whatever they want because it’s their company. We fought for the rights we have under our contract—and we have to stop giving those rights away.”

A Teamster for more than 20 years, David Fennell has worked in every aspect of UPS’s operations as an unloader, sorter, air driver, package car driver and in the feeder department.  David has more than ten years of experience as a Shop Steward—representing package car drivers at 43rd Street.  Four years ago, David reluctantly gave up his stewardship at 43rd Street to pursue a career as a tractor-trailer driver in the Long Island City feeder department.

Neil O’Brien
Candidate for Local 804 Trustee

Neil O'Brien

“Local 804 can be a stronger voice for working Teamsters on the job and in the political arena.  It’s time to Put Members First again.”

A 26-year Teamster, Neil O’Brien served as a package steward in the Riverhead Center and the Hamptons Center. He currently works in the Long Island Feeder Department.  To Neil, unionism means standing up for working people both on the job and in the community. As an active participant in the Teamsters Political Action Committee, DRIVE (Democrat, Republican, Independent, Voter Education), O’Brien campaigned against the Team Act—an anti-union bill which would have legalized company unions. Neil helped lead the effort to persuade Long Island Congressional Representative Michael Forbes to change his vote from a Yes to a No which helped defeat the Team Act and win a victory for democratic unions.

Mark Holmes
Candidate for Local 804 Trustee

markholmes-bio“A strong union involves everyone—part-timers and full-timers, inside workers and drivers, Black, white and Latino.  Local 804 Members United is about bringing strong representation to every Local 804 Teamster.”

In his 21 years at UPS, Mark Holmes has worked as an unloader, sorter, full-time 22.3 and as a return clerk.  Mark has represented members as a Shop Steward for the last 12 years.  He also serves as the Safety Co-Chair for the Twilight and Preload Shifts on the Preload Safety Committee in the Nassau Building.  Mark ran as an independent candidate for Business Agent in 2006.  This year, he is teaming up as part of the Local 804 Members United Slate.

Chris Sabatino
Candidate for Local 804 Trustee

Chris_Sabatino-bio“Tough management like UPS requires a tough union.  Our team will take on supervisors working violations, production harassment and disrespect toward drivers and inside workers alike. It’s time to replace go-along, get-along with tough, aggressive and fair.”

A Package Car Steward, Chris Sabatino started working for UPS in 1997.  Fed up with the harassment, disrespect and contract violations, Chris stepped up to run for shop steward. In addition to representing the drivers in his center, Chris has become a voice for all Local 804 members.  Read more.

Dave Oringer
Candidate for Local 804 Business Agent

oringer-bio“It’s the Executive Board’s job to bring the union together and take on the abuse that UPS dishes out, instead of blaming individual members. We need a plan of action backed by our local union’s leadership. That is why I’m running on the 804 Members United Slate.”

A 25-year Teamster, Dave Oringer started with UPS in 1984 as a part time loader in the Nassau building.  Dave went into package in 1987 as a driver and served as an Alternate Steward in the Hicksville Center for more than five years.  Dave currently works in the Long Island Feeder Department.

Ken Reiman
Candidate for Local 804 Business Agent

Ken Reiman

“In my 25 years as a Teamster, I have never seen the membership so overworked or so fed up. We can’t afford go-along, get-along. It’s time to stand up for our rights.”

In his 25 years as a Teamster, Ken Reiman has worked as a preloader and driver—in Foster Avenue and now in Melville. Ken got active in our union during the 1997 UPS Strike. He launched the popular Local Agitator newsletter to empower the rank and file with union information, opinions and ideas and to demonstrate that members can “agitate” against corporate greed and for positive change.

Sam Cuevas
Candidate for Local 804 Business Agent

“We need union leadership that will stand behind us at contract time. I’ve joined the 804 Members United Slate because I believe in this team and our program standing up to UPS and putting members first.”

A Teamster for 27 years, Sam Cuevas has served our union at every level. Sam worked as an Organizer with both the Local 804 and for the International Union. Sam has eight years of experience as a Shop Steward representing package car drivers and currently serves as an Alternate Steward in the Greenpoint Center.

Steve Auz
Candidate for Local 804 Business Agent

steve_auz2“Over the last ten years, our leadership has declined and management has gotten the upper hand. It’s time to even the playing field and restore some sense of fairness.”

A Teamster for nearly 22 years, Steve Auz worked as a Package Car driver for 17 years before going full-time inside. Local 804 members elected Steve to serve as an Alternate Delegate to the International Convention in 2006. Steve served our country with the 82nd Airborne Division for five years. Currently, Steve is a Shop Steward in the Maspeth Building.

William Riley Fernandez
Health & Safety Director

“The 804 Members United slate is committed to fighting for strong contracts, enforcing them, and protecting the health and safety of Local 804 Teamsters—initiatives that have been left undone for too many years. The present executive board has lost touch with the members. The time for change is now.”

An Inside Full-Timer presently working as a Hazmat Designated Responder and 26-year Teamster, William Riley Fernandez has educated and inspired workers at 43rd Street with genuine care for their rights and well being. Riley has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Communications, Media, Film & Video Production, is fluent in Spanish and volunteers in law enforcement. Outside of UPS, he has worked as a teacher, conflict mediation gang counselor, drug rehab counselor, special events coordinator and photojournalist.
